Self-care Series: Georgie Powell

Self-care Series: SPACE app founder, Georgie Powell

At &Breathe, we're extremely passionate about our parental self-care mission.  It's so important to make time for yourself in your parenting journey - self-care isn't selfish!  After all if you're not at your best, how can you be at your best for those around you?

Georgie Powell is CEO and co-founder of SPACE,  an app designed to help you find a healthy relationship with your phone. She feels that it’s her responsibility to use technology for social change. Her wake up moment was when she became a new mum, glued to social media and not feeling great about it.

Work/Life Balance

&B: How do you manage to balance work and life?  Is it possible?!

GP: Things have been particularly crazy of late, with a new baby, international move from Australia to the UK and a house renovation.  Suffice is to say, I don't think there is any balance at the moment, just survival.   I think it's important to just accept that sometimes life gets out of hand.  Recently the business has suffered - but it won't be forever.

Career vs Kids

&B: How have you found that your professional life has changed since having kids?

GP: I'm more aware of making sure that the work I do gives me positive energy - that I'm inspired, energised and motivated by it.  I don't think life is just about hours in the day, but more about the energy that you get from and give to the things that you do.  If you're stretching in all directions, it's only worth it if it's making you happy.

learning lessons

&B: What do you hope to teach/pass on to your children by the way you and your husband balance your different careers and parenting?

GP: That to achieve, you have to work hard.  But that you should work hard on things that make you feel good.  Both my husband and I are lucky enough to be able to choose the work we want to do, and it means we can play equal roles at home.

Fit

on keeping fit

&B: How do you like to keep fit and active?

GP: I wish I could do more!  In Australia, I did a lot of ocean swimming, which is very calming.  Here, as it's winter, I'm trying to build a hot yoga practice.  I also walk a lot (often with the baby in the sling).  It's a good time to organise thoughts whilst exercising.

Food

on eating healthily

&B: What's your best foodhack secret to eating healthily?

GP: Since moving back to the UK, I've discovered Riverfood veggie boxes.  It's a great way to make sure you're all packing away the greens, and they have great easy recipe ideas to cook innovatively with seasonal veggies too.

Feel

on relaxing

&B: What's your favourite thing to do to relax?

GP: Having a big bubbly bath.  It's become almost a daily survival ritual of late. [&B - keep it simple!]

The most important thing is having someone who you can talk really honestly to.

#1

#1 Selfcare Tip

&B: What's your number one self-care tip for mums or dads

GP: Keep talking to your partner.  When times get tough, or busy, or just tiring, the most important thing is having someone who you can talk really honestly to.
