How to be Positive in Tricky Times

In tricky times, we all need a little positivity. But how to find it?

Clio Wood, &Breathe Founder, gives her top tips.

Find your gratitudE

List three things daily that you’re grateful for in your own life. This can be big (new job!) or small (managed to get the washing done today!) but they add up to a great deal of goodness to counter the (ugh) news.

TIP: Listing is great, telling someone your list is better, writing it down is even more powerful. See our Tortoise blog post for tips on journalling/diary keeping.

Stop scrolling

Only consume the news once a day, or at least limit your current habit. It might be worth it for your own sanity.

TIP: Set a 10-minute timer for scrolling and be strict about switching off when your time’s up.

More about our retreats

Nurture yourself!

Nourish your body and mind by take self-care snacks. 3 minutes breathing, cooking a lovely meal together, half an hour of exercise, a cup of tea, just slowing down are all great things to make you feel better in yourself.

TIP: Nourish App is a great resource for mindful moments to nourish your mind and body, especially if you don’t know where to start.

Get creative

When things seem a bit ugly, why not make beautiful things yourself? It’s amazing how therapeutic crafting or art can be (with or without the kids) and you’re left with something lovely to look at at the end.

TIP: Stuck for ideas? Get Googling. Short of money? Doodling with a pen and scrap paper is a great place to start.

Dance it out

You heard me. There’s nothing like a dancefloor classic to get the body moving, the heart pumping in a good way, the endorphins rolling and the laughter bubbling. With or without the kids, alone or solo, wherever you are, a good song can’t be beaten.

TIP: If you’re embarrassed, close your eyes, plug your headphones in and just go for it. I guarantee you’ll be smiling and feeling alive at the end of it.

Start with one thing. Just one thing. What are you grateful for today?
